1)The virtual simulator to me is what separates us from being animals. It more of a gift than a curse. Evolution has basically gifted us this power of understanding time. We are able to think of the past, present and future. This concept explains a lot about how I behave because I always worry about the future. Every mistake I make results in me worrying about how it will affect my future. Also I ponder about the past at times and how I wish I could have changed something about that situation, but the past does not give me as much anxiety as the future. This is probably why people think this evolutionary trait is a curse since it can cloud people’s thoughts. For example, when you are in a relationship and you have not talked to your significant other in months, some people start to think “oh my god what if she got in an accident?” or “what happened? Is she cheating on me?” People start to create these thoughts without even having any evidence. Another example that I went through is getting a bad grade in a test. When I bombed my first math test in college I panicked and started conjuring insane thoughts like “I just prevented myself from getting into a good college” and “what if I get a bad grade in all the next tests?” All because of one test I started to not think rationally, but without being able to think ahead we would not be able to advance at all. I have friends that live in the present, and they always tell me, “Live in the moment, Jomel! Enjoy life!” These people have dropped out of college or are in college but focus mainly on partying. They are not focusing on studies and just want to have fun. Why? Because they want to enjoy the moment and they do not see what their actions will lead into. These people usually realize their mistakes when they are older when it is too late. Another example of why this hypothesis is good because without it we would not have been able to land on the Moon. I don’t think scientist back then were like “Hey! Let us go to the moon!” then built a rocket without planning. The Apollo missions took years of planning. NASA had to plan and carefully construct the whole mission before even leaving the surface of Earth. They had to think of the possible problems that could arise and what they would do with that certain situation. Also if it was successful what the astronauts would do in the moon.
2)I am not really sure if the M.E. theory applies to my belief system since I am a believer of science. It actually uses evidence that have meaning. It is not dependent on faith. This is why I am such a strong believer in science because it does not have to fill an empty void that people feel that says, “This answer is not enough. There must be a deeper meaning to life.” This is similar to when people get so offended when you state that they are just made of matter and they came from the same descendants as apes.
3)I find purpose in life through my family and science. My family keeps me going because I love them dearly, and they have always supported me since I was a child. I want to make them proud. That is one of my biggest goals, to make them proud of me. Right now I cannot do much to make them feel that way because I am in college pursuing something they did not approve of at first. However, someday the tables will turn and I will be the one who pays for their wants and needs. The other reason I have purpose in my life is science because it is constantly moving forward, discovering new things, and even unveiling new mysteries of the universe. I want to be part of this frontier that will lead humans to become a better society and a smarter species. That is what is keeping me alive that hopefully someday I will become a part of this. I want to contribute to society and have an intellectual impact on the human zeitgeist. Someday my name will be remembered just like those of Plato, Newton, Maxwell, and Sagan.
