Film test 4 22-2
1. I think that many people resist the theory of evolution is because of religion. We were taught that God the Almighty created the universe and all the living things. The thought that human beings were evolved from other species is hard for many to comprehend. It’s easier for me to understand and perhaps to accept the theory of evolution when it comes to other species, but human beings are more complex in our behavior and the way we think. The pros of Darwin’s theory are through scientific research we are able to point out that all living organisms are connected in some way and somehow we were branched off from our ancestors and evolved into something else. The cons of evolution to me is the process of survival of the fittest and only the strongest and the better adaptable species can survive which is sad because certain species may not be able to adapt to the new environment and will become extinct.
2. There are many things that cannot be explained by evolution such as the way we think. How we pick our friends and the social bonding that we have with each other. The way we feel pain, happy, anger, sadness, etc. and most of all how did the process of evolvement take place? Did the whole species got wiped out before the others are formed? These are the questions that I have when it comes to evolution.
3. What I understand about eliminative materialism is what your mind perceived and wanted to believe but does not really exist such as a can of soda on a hot day. In my mental state I believe that my thirst would be quenched, but after drinking it, I was still thirsty or when I look at the ocean and see that the water of the ocean is blue because in my mind I perceived it in that color due of the blue sky reflecting the ocean, but when I put the water in a cup the water isn’t blue at all in fact it’s clear. Another example would be the sun. Does it really rise or it is because we believe that it does. The fact is the sun does not rise but it seems like it because the earth rotate so we think it does. So the eliminative materialism is what we desire or want to occurred or believe it to be true is only what our mind perceived it to be true.

EXAM 4: CODE 22-2 1) I think a large number of people resist the theory of evolution by natural selection because it may complicate and question their personal beliefs. Most people practice a religion that has provided a path for them that was destined from birth. When confronted with the theory of evolution by natural selection, some may be hesitant to respond because it quickly turns into a debate. Darwin’s theory makes me feel comfortable because it provides logical explanation for our own existence. It provides a pattern that goes farther than religious beliefs. Being that there are thousands of religions in this world, makes it hard to decide which religion to choose if a person was once atheist. The theory of evolution provides a structural way of explaining itself. Throughout our lives we strive to create the best “design.” As state in the film of evolution, I agree that there is immense pressure to keep our unique configuration of data so it doesn’t get destroyed or forever lost. I feel that this theory is more direct than many religions known to man and it all begins with variation. 2) I think the existence or non-existence of intelligent life on other planets cannot be explained by evolution. There are so many questions that still remain unanswered by the government. Every time a reported sighting of unidentified flying objects is projected on the news, the government decides not to elaborate on the subject. Some classified cases that remained locked in Area 51, in Nevada, were exposed to the public which became declassified. In 2013, the government finally admitted that Area 51 was a real military installation. With this in mind, the only matters that have been declassified are mostly related to military aviation tactics. This includes the project of the U2 Spy Plane. Many skeptics believed that numerous planes were being built replicating technology that was supposedly adopted from intelligent life that landed on our planet. Of course, this was never proven and certain matters still remain classified. For all we know, Area 51 may be a decoy to another installation that holds the truths to intelligent life from other planets. Even if they were to declassify these matters, I don’t believe that it can be explained by evolution. 3) An example of eliminative materialism is evaporation. In some religions, it is believed that when a loved one passes away you may place a cup full of water next to their memorial. This is mainly done as a form of respect. Over time the full cup of water starts to look empty as if their spirit had been drinking from it. With this phenomenon people started questioning the root cause of this occurrence. The root cause of this phenomenon is evaporation. Evaporation can be simply defined as the process in which water is converted form its liquid form to its vapor form. As the water cycle indicates, heat or energy is necessary for evaporation to occur. Energy is use to break the bonds that hold water molecules together. This explains why water evaporates at boiling points. Gastric bypass surgery is another example of eliminative materialism. Many people are under the impression that this surgery will instantaneously remove all of their body fat. What they don’t realize is that this is a strategy that surgeons discovered that tricks your body. This surgical procedure is only meant to reduce the size of your stomach. Most surgeons shrink the stomach to the size of a potato. The purpose of this is to eliminate the space for higher intake of foods and minimize appetites. Another example of eliminative materialism is steroid use. People that aren’t directly associated with the fitness industry may be easily misled by steroids. Many documentaries have discussed that steroids produce high levels of testosterone, muscle recuperation and muscle growth. The general public is under the impression that steroids will make you more muscular within a matter of weeks with minimal exercising. It’s a scientific fact that steroids will help you achieve your goals if you’re consistent with dieting and training. Without a proper diet, one may experience no weight loss. Without consistent training, there will be no muscle tissue to repair and recuperate. Both of these elements are key factors when using performance enhancers. Exam 4 Code: 22-2 1. I believe that a large number of people reject the theory of evolution by natural selection because it contradicts various religions and changes the way people perceive the world to be. It is far too difficult for a religious family to drop all of their beliefs in teachings of their past or even hope for a higher power or after life. Some people just will not believe that we have evolved from simpler living organisms because the idea is ‘farfetched’. The pros of evolution are evident because they provides us with an explanation for the diversified species we have become and our history as well. I am comfortable with the theory of evolution because it provides concrete evidence as to how mankind came about and why things are the way they are. The theory or natural selection is fascinating to me because beneath all the social shenanigans that takes place, I still see people following the rules of natural selection. We cannot deny what is blatantly true. On the other hand, people will be stubborn and closed minded about this theory because of the holes it punches through religion. This is when the cons arise. People will argue and even ban such words of evolution because of the controversy it brings to all types of groups. This may even anger people as I am typing away. It seems that the more holes that are punched through religious beliefs, the more people begin to deny and frown upon evolution and other scientific theories for that matter. If other sciences do not interfere with belief, then there is never a problem. I respect the Darwin and the theory of evolution by natural selection, but it is no reason to stop believing and give up on faith. 2. I believe that the soul cannot be explained by the theory of evolution. The soul by definition is the spiritual or immaterial part of a human or animal, which is immortal. Since the theory of evolution only seems to explain things from the beginning of time to death, then how can it explain something that is immortal? On the contrary if the spirit can transcend into the afterlife which is a questionable belief, then does the soul truly exist? This is a question that leaves me scatterbrained. 3. Eliminative materialism pretty much means that folk psychology is wrong because of the flawed explanations that are offered in certain scenarios. These explanations usually fall under beliefs and desire. One example is that students think that studying just means memorizing definitions to pass an exam. The reality is that concepts must be understood so that the material has a lasting impact in our memories. Another example is military style parenting. Most blue collar families follow the “do it because I said so” style of discipline. Now we realize that parents’ actions serve as examples and military style discipline is only temporary for compliance of children. Lastly, people seem to think that others who go to the gym usually exercise live a healthy lifestyle. We are finding out that people with the chiseled abs or striated bodies have this appearance because they are starved or have a very low intake on macros. Everything that involves having a great physique includes strict diets instead of gruesome hours in the gym. Pedro Zaragoza Site: sites.google.com/site/philomodeled/

Film Test 4
1. I believe there are multiple reasons for people not believing in evolution. I would have to say that I personally believe that religion is a large benefactor to this. Religion seeps into almost every part of our society. Whether it be schools, government, workplace, or just out on the streets. Most radical religious people will deny any proof for the mere reason of faith. Another reason for people rejecting evolution would be sheer ignorance, or misinformation being spread. I feel that a large majority of people don’t truly understand the theory of evolution.
2. Something that I believe evolution can’t really explain is what was before the big bang? What is nothing and how can nothing evolve? If everything in existence came from the big bang, then what came from the big bang and how can evolution explain that? This may be a redundant question, but a question nonetheless. How can evolution explain llight? or most things at the subatomic level? How can evolution explain electrons being in two places at the same time?
3. Something that I think most people experience is to believe a thought to be real. We all have the ability to construct vivid little worlds in our own heads where we can create situations, that may or may not have actually happened. Moments like this could lead to one becoming angry, or happy, or even sad. An example would be say another driver cuts you off; in your head you’re thinking he did that to make me mad! But, maybe in reality he had no idea you were there, however, using your mental construct you created a situation that wasn’t real. Another example could be suspecting your significant other of cheating, something that plagues people. Sitting in your head making up scenarios that just aren’t real, yet you believe them to be.

22-2
1. I believe that a large number of people resist the theory of evolution because of their religion. A lot of Christian people believe that God created the heavens and earth and that Adam and Eve were put on this earth first but science has proven something to be different. I am a believer and also feel comfortable with Darwins theory because it just makes sense how everything has evolved. As time passes, Scientists are able to prove more of how we became on this earth. 2. I don’t think the aspect of living life after death can be explained. I have always heard that once we die we come back as an animal such as a fish, bird or dog. As a believer. I believe both to be true. You can come back and live as a pet with your loved ones. Then I also believe that your soul rests in paradise. I’m not sure which is fact because none have been scientifically proven but I do believe both can definitely happen. Darwin’s theory has led me to believe that we can come back to life as a pet. 3. Eliminative materialism is the process of explaining things that you believe to be true with logic. For example if it’s raining outside and you do not want to get wet. You would put on your rain boots, get an umbrella and jacket before going outside. Next if you were having computer problems and could not log on to the internet, you would then check to see if the Ethernet cable was properly plugged in, then call your internet carrier to see if there was an outage in your area. Lastly If you walk under a ladder and then get into a car accident you would believe that you had bad luck because you walked under a ladder.

Response to bhart1992: The two factors you listed for people rejecting the theory of evolution are spot on. Both religion and ignorance play a major role when it comes to our existence. There are too many pessimistic people in this world. I guess the million dollar question is in fact, what existed before the big bang? I believe it way too much for one person to analyze. I agree with your statement of people being able to control their own thoughts and differentiate on what’s real and what isn’t. Carlos Zaragoza sites.google.com/site/myphilosophychannel/
