QUESTIONS:
1. How would you feel if you realized that you were just “stuff”, just this body, and that there was nothing “meta” physical about you? Be sure to use your “I” voice and present your reaction in an autobiographical framework. Also make pertinent references (when possible) to the film on mysterium tremendum.
2. Using your own life as a template, provide two or more examples of Plato’s Allegory of the cave. Hint: think of those times in your life when you mistakenly believed something to be true or real but you later realized wasn’t. Be sure to think within the context of the movie.
ANSWERS:
1. I could never believe that any individual was just "stuff," and that there was nothing meta about anyone. If I was to begin to believe this, I would feel non-existent. There would be no meaning to my existence, therefore my actions and way of thinking would completely change; furthermore, this would also change my personality, ambition, relationships, values, and overall just how I view the world. If the statement "you are just 3 pounds of meat" was true then all diversity among individuals would not exist. Believing in this theory would decrease my ability to perceive my unique persona and appearance. There would be no evolution among the human race if everyone was to believe there was nothing meta about ourselves. I would feel that my thoughts were all irrelevant and that my mind was no different than anyone else's.
2. Using my life as a template there have been a few cases where I mistakenly believed something to be true or real, but then later realized it wasn't. I want to first speak on religion and my prior strong belief in religion and how it has now changed. I am not atheist and I completely believe in a higher power and heaven; nevertheless, I do believe being so strongly dedicated to religion and feeling the NEED to go to church is not necessary. Throughout my years of schooling, and classes such as biology I do believe science takes a very large part of the creation of life. However, I also believe science only goes so far and then comes God. In my personal opinion, strong believers of religion who deny any type of scientific contribution to the creation of earth may seem somewhat ignorant and not willing to be open minded to other evolution theories. I now feel open minded to other hypothesis of how this earth was created, but I still keep my personal belief that there also is a God. Another circumstance where I mistakenly believed something to be real was my belief of how adulthood would be. Now that I am in my adult years and can now understand things such as government, relationships, and human behavior, I see that my way of viewing the world has completely changed since I was younger. I also have realized that I continue to change my opinion of things that more I learn and the older I become.
