Week 10 Question 1
Perform a transcendental sociological analysis on one of the above mystics. (Jainism, Ramanah Maharshi, Sawan Singh, The Hidden Yogi, John Roger Hinkins)
John Roger Hinkins, Called JR by his followers led seminars and a cult based on the idea that people where basically intelligent beings, or gods, spirits that dwell in these bodies on earth, and he taught people how to gain monetary and physical goods and get in touch with these spiritual selves. In terms of the above process of analysis through sociology, HInkins cult lacks Authenticity, because of how high a percentage of followers deflect from the group, and not only leave, but then also go on to attempt to expose the cult and HInkins actions. Not only is the group not widely accept, those who accept it are often hoping to leave, left in terror, and those who leave are terrorized and aim to expose the actions and events of what occurred while they where the part of the cult. In itself this situation lacks authenticity in every sense. In terms of legitimacy, this cult is also rather lacking. This cult not only forces you to believe to be a part of the cult, but also enforces certain rules upon its followers. Furthermore they have been known to do things through terror force, and often used the ideas of the religion itself to do terrible things within the cult. This cult also brings people in through the idea of material gains-which relates to fitting in in society. This clearly identifies a magical mind set within the cult. This cult also relates to a lower mind set of thinking, the mythical state, since they believe themselves to literally be gods living in these bodies, which takes fantasy and believes it to be the represented or reality. John Roger Hinkins completely lacks rationality, and sucks people into his cult through materials and a façade of goodness, then keeps them in with terror and falsified rules of the religion. This is a perfect example of a lack of rationality that has cause the followers of this cult to do things they did not agree with, not hurting others, but hurting themselves, because one person so twisted the idea of religion to fit his own personal wishes.

Week 10 Preforming a transcendental sociological analysis of "The hidden Yogini" Yogini Mataji had abandoned her title of a guru and ostracized herself because she believed near death experiences could be accomplished with higher states of consciousness and that one could witness states of consciousness far beyond the rational mind. Her view is one of authenticity however her followers which she abandoned had a legitimate belief that she was the source of visions they might have. She clearly abandoned that title because she believed it to be false, and chose a life hidden away from any such title. sites.google.com/site/anthonymorenoblogger/test-posts

Week 10 Film Questions 12349 Wow, well this John Roger does not seem to be at all who he claims to be. Surely, you would know this with your past attempts to expose his cult. This religious movement seems a lot like Scientology in where there is so much money involved. For a religion to be based on worldly possessions and money is strange to me. I think most people would agree with me when I say that it is supposed to be a spiritual movement. When money is involved and people are doing what Roger did, it is more like a game then a genuine ideal. It seems as if John Roger was just trying to work the system with this religion. This is how he was able to gain tax-exempt status and also recruit all of these high society individuals. It is always a very cautioning thing when an ex-member of a religion like this comes out against it. The man in the clips who claimed to have been in the elite circle of members at one time has some very strange confessions. After an analysis of Roger’s cult, it seems clear that there was corruption from the beginning and that there were definitely some malpractices going on. For a “religious” leader to be so selfish with the money he has raised is a strange thing. This is something that has repeated itself throughout history. It is an age-old human flaw to abuse power and selfishly rule. This sort of human temptation is clearly relevant in the case of John Roger. It makes one wonder; do the followers of these religious cults even know what they are signing up for? Or do they just join the movement because it is the attractive and/or “cool” thing to do? sites.google.com/site/tuckerhartwig/home
