Alejandro Espinoza Week 5
1. The virtual simulator theory of consciousness is the concept that we never know what is real because we have various states of consciousness. We may have an idea that this state of reality is the real deal but we can question other state of consciousness such as our dreaming state, our wondering state, our imagination state etc., and still not know in we are consciously in the real thing or living the real thing. This theory can explain my behavior in the form that everything I do is based on this state of living. I know what I can and cant do in this state but if I were in the dreaming dimension I know I can do things that are different from the real life state of consciousness and maybe that can also be real but in the dream life. Depending on what stage of consciousness I am in I will behave differently. As for this life I know I will do things that are only appropriate for this virtual simulator.
2. The theory of meaning equivalence doesn’t have much meaning if I am relating it to me now in the form of religion because I don’t follow any religion at the moment but if I was to look back when I was younger I would see the theory related to me because I was living off the basis of the catholic religion and thought that I had reason to live based of the beliefs of the religion.
3. I find purpose in my life at the point of having to reach the goals that I want. There are specific things that keep me moving forward. Some examples are having a family, my own house, a permanent job etc. This can be related to the imperative theory in the form that we always have a choice either move forward and don’t move at all but regardless of the decision life is still going

Erica Garcia 4/6/2015 Week 5 Examination 98776660D 1. The virtual simulator theory of consciousness is many different states of consciousness, but we never know which one is real. For example, my living state of what I think it is could be real, but I also have a dream state where I can do anything I want without dying. There are many states of consciousness and this explains my behavior because depending on which state I am in, I can act and do what I please depending on its limitations or opportunities. 2. The M.E theory makes me question the purpose of religion. For example, religion could just be a base for people to think they have a purpose to live on this earth. The M. E theory of religion doesn’t affect me much. Rather, it helps me open my mind to see people in religions differently in a good way, they need something to hold onto to have faith in something greater, while there are those who are satisfied with the discoveries of science who claim truth and reality. Religious people have their own belief system and The M.E theory helps me respect them even more so than I do now. 3. For the past few weeks I have pondered the question what is the purpose of life. In the film, there is an analogy of a train that leads to death if you don’t jump off and die anyway. The purpose in my life is to live life in a healthy way. For example, how I choose to be in life will affect those around me and I want to lead a positive lifestyle. How I find my purpose in life is by helping others and letting myself change and mold for the better. Although the train is going to lead to our deaths, we can still do what makes us happy before we die, we don’t need to jump off too early to get it over with.

Week 5 Film Questions 9877666DD Question 1 According to the “Simulator” hypothesis, our consciousness exists as a tool for us to play out possible scenarios before they actually happen. This can help explain how we behave the way we do because we are constantly learning from our past and planning out our future. This is something that is specific to human beings and is a big reason why we are much more advanced than the animals around us. By simulating an event before it happens, we are able to come up with a better plan of action. It allows for critical thought which can act as a gateway to many self-revelations. Question 2 The theory of “Meaning Equivalence” brings up a good point. The point being, people are more comfortable believing in something than nothing at all. This could be attributed with human nature; however, I don’t believe that it dictates every scenario in which people believe things. Personally, I attribute my faith to an inner desire to be in a relationship with God. To believe in something just to do so would be sadly redundant and pointless. I do not doubt that people do this; however, this is not the way in which my beliefs are defined. Question 3 I am constantly uncovering more and more purposes for my life. I believe that my purpose, above all others, is to love the Lord my God with all my heart and to love my neighbors as myself. Every day, I am reminded of why I was put on this Earth. I am driven by a force I cannot describe. After living with this purpose for so long, I have learned that no other way or lifestyle will satisfy and solve my needs the same way. I do not live for myself but rather for Christ my redeemer. sites.google.com/site/tuckerhartwig/

1. Explain the "virtual simulator" hypothesis to consciousness. How does such a concept help explain why you behave the way you do? Be sure to draw from your day to day habits and how your mind projects into the future and reflects about the past.
- The Virtual Simulator concept explains that whatever we ask the universe arise because of the architecture of our brain. The different brain states that you have lead to different questions that you ask. It allows us to play out different situations in our head to help us choose which route we want to take the answer depends on how the factors at play will effect our well being. I have learned through witnessing someones car being broken into for a stereo unit and subwoofers, not to play my system to loud and avoid attention to my vehicle in order to prevent someone from coming to my car and stealing my equipment.
2. How does M.E. theory apply to your own belief system?
- The M.E. Theory of meaning would benefit Darwin's theory of evolution because it states that any meaning is better than no meaning. Religion gives people a meaning to want to live. Therefore weither or not one religion is truer than the other the main point would be if the viewer finds something of value or is given a meaning of existence. This would allow a person to better adapt and choose proper paths to lead them to a better life and finding a mate to reproduce.
3. Where do you find purpose in your own life? How does it relate to the "evolutionary" imperative? - I find purpose in life through spreading the light of my religion. Through living a life of love, and compassion I can mirror the light of my religion hopefully onto people that are looking for a light. Through this living style I have been successful on numerous business transactions, and also lead me to my wonderful girlfriend who one day I plan on having children with, all leading back to "evolution" and continuing my legacy.

1. The Virtual Simulator concept explains my behavior by actually getting this question finished on the assignment. It helped me identify the route of completing assignments for class that will help lead me to getting a better grade in this class which may possibly motivate me to take more classes and get myself closer to obtaining my Associates degree. Rather than not doing anything, allowing my grade drop and possibly failing the class. Which I will then have to re-take the course and start all over providing a speed bump on the roller coaster I call life. The concept can be explained by imagining your mind being able to create an image, dream or movie that portrays different options in which lead to different routes some less successful than others. Using those ideas you choose the best action to take to more better achieve your goal.
2. My religion applies the ME Theory to our prophet Ellen G. White. She preached that eating pork, shell fish, shrimp, and other bottom dwellers were not good for your health. Those animals being the lowest of the food chain, are made of unhealthy filth that are better not to be put in our bodies. Through preachings of eating healthy, members of my religion are proven to live longer healthier lives. . It is not forbidden, and I fall suspect to indulging on a nice shrimp skampi every once in a while, but if you want to live longer you eat cleaner. M.E. Theory is that any meaning is better than no meaning provided that one meaning makes one want to live an extra day.
3. I find purpose in my life, because although I want to do well in a professional sense and earning a good salary my dream and overall plan is to one day have a loving husband that I can have numerous amounts of children with and spread my seed. That is how I will do my part in evolution.

Film Exam Questions 5 code: 9877666DD
1. As in Patricia Churchland's interview the mind is the brain, and we are our own imprisonment and freedom. We choose to believe what we would like to believe and see what our mind is trained to see. I think that is why we act the way we do. The mind sets its own limits. Although some people are aware and some aren't. The people who are aware are usually the ones that control their own lives. From my day to day habits I reflect on the future by reflecting on the past and correcting some thoughts that have caused certain behaviors. As if I reflect on the past for example a math class I took and unfortunately failed, I think back to remind myself how I was thinking at that time and why I failed it, so I can learn from those thoughts and not happen again.
2. M.E. applies to my own belief system because I also, believe certain things that in order to be able to move on with life and go on to something new and be happy. As in the video it explains how there can be a very bizarre myth and be believed because it needs a meaning. A better example as of why M.E. applies to my belief system is that I choose to ignore the part where God placed an angel to keep Adam and Eve from eating from the tree that will make them better and maybe as good as God which is what God doesn't want. I choose to not believe that because God to me is good and that sounds like a selfish thing to do because in the end Adam and Eve eat from a bad tree.
3. I find purpose in my own life by doing what makes me happy and the people I love happy like my mother. I see a purpose there because I still quite don't understand why we are here or what we are here for but as I hear life is short and it just needs to be enjoyed and the days need to be taken advantage of in good ways by being happy and doing what feels good for your own self.
